Dyson Signs has delivered an inventive decor solution that’s transformed a staff canteen…

Dyson Signs, based in Sheffield, is no stranger at all to the emerging art of designing and applying digitally printed decor. The company’s work for schools and colleges is well known and its credentials as a sign maker ensure that it has all the skills needed from design to print; installation to maintenance or removal.

Dyson Signs was recently approach by a long-standing customer who specialises in fit-outs. He wanted some stylised wall graphics to make a staff canteen at a factory operated by Bilstein look a little more welcoming. He came with ideas. What came to pass was quite a complex job in terms of both execution and logistics.

Dyson Signs was supplied artwork for the job but it was agreed that “more” was needed in order to get the design intent covered. “More” in this case meant more cars. More cars of a very precise and stylised genre. No amount of research came up with the reference needed and so Dyson Signs’ team made contact with a designer specialising in the field to get the job done. He was based in Russia.

Having got the new car motifs, Dyson Signs completed the design and printed it using their Mimaki printer on Metamark MD5 which was then laminated with a layer of MG700 in satin. A nice wipe-clean finish. The graphics perfectly evoke era and style. A very expert print job.

Some added complications were presented in the ultimate application. The scoreboards featuring in the design are in fact real digital screens and the decor had to fit around them in a convincing fashion. Road signs? They’re acrylic pockets to contain printed literature. The net result may have been a bit challenging to apply but it doesn’t just work, it works brilliantly.

Digitally printed decor whether its for commercial or domestic applications is an idea whose time is yet to come. Approached with a creative intent, the potential for the new medium is unexploited and ready to develop. Dyson Signs has made decor a core expertise and the company is ensuring that every wall its work graces is doing much more than just holding up the roof.
