Teignmouth based Kameleon Signs delivers a couple of eye-popping wraps for Team Rõnin Drifting…

Motorsports is a pretty big thing. At its very pinnacle, many millions are spent on cars, drivers, advertising and sponsorship, and on the huge entourage needed to deliver televised events and the formulas. A little further from motorsports’ apex, there are fewer sponsors and millions involved but the excitement and sense of occasion that’s there for the enjoying is every bit as potent.

Team Rõnin Drifting comprises a couple of friends who’ve made grassroots motorsports their passion. They’re pretty expert and successful in the realms of ‘drifting.’ Drifting is a motorsports specialisation, now globally acknowledged, where the vehicles’ drivers set out with bucketloads of bravery, and considerable skill, to break the traction of the car on the track by oversteering it. 

Anyone who has accidentally ‘lost the back end’ of a car while on the road will know the feeling when the rear comes around and the car’s doing its own thing. Drift car drivers have turned that into an art and competition has grown around it since the sport was exported from Japan in the 80s. 

Team Rõnin both built and drive the two competitive cars it fields and very recently decided to spend a little to make the cars really look the part. They rocked up at Kameleon Signs’ door in Teignmouth where Andrew Nickels and team got to apply their wrapping expertise to the opportunity.

Working with a more or less blank canvas brief they came up with a highly distinctive and individual design that really suits the cars and somehow evokes the sport’s oriental roots. The colourways are eye-watering and the detail flows over the bodywork in flame-like licks. The whole effect is defining of Team Rõnin and works brilliantly. 

The Kameleon Signs team decided to give Metamark’s premium cast wrapping film, MetaCast MDC a chance to prove itself for the wraps. The design was printed on a Roland TruVis TR2 and the printed detail was laminated using MDC’s matching MetaGuard MGC laminate. According to Andrew Nickels, the MDC was a joy to work with. It handled brilliantly and these results shriek rather than simply speak for themselves. 

Wrapping has elevated to an art form these days and it gives expression to anyone who employs it to good effect. As a skill, it’s now widely practiced but retains an air of exclusivity connected to quality. In the expert hands found at Kameleon Signs wrapping finds a home in commercial livery and at the extremes of the application. Andrew has built an enviable reputation locally and further afield. Not hard to see why.
